You’ve probably heard of retinol as the number one anti-aging ingredient in topical facial creams and serums. Do you actually know how it works and why it works, though?
Retinol is made from vitamin A, which we get naturally in many of our foods. The part that makes it anti-aging is the increased production of collagen. Collagen is a connective tissue that stretches like a rubber band. Similar to the band, it doesn’t work the same the more it’s used. In terms of skin, the elasticity decreases, leading to wrinkles, lines, and other signs of aging over time. Retinol specifically prevents the production of collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down collagen, less collagen leads to more wrinkles.

Because of this, it’s also a great product to decrease acne breakouts. It goes deep below the surface, essentially working from the inside out. There are a few side effects, including dryness and increased sensitivity to the sun. Overall, the results seem promising and suitable for nearly all ages. The only group unsuitable would be children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
What is retinol and why is it in skincare products (WebMD)
In terms of acne, this is a great product for acne scars because it does go deep under the skin. It works to renew old skin, minimizing the appearance of acne marks. It also works to prevent acne by protecting the skin, from the inside
